hong kong - layered in magic
An early start as we get into sheep formation for today’s journey. The harbor is positively bustling with activity.
Traveling by tunnel under the ocean that separates us from The Peak Tram, we wind our way to the Reciprocating Cable Car which has been running since 1888. At this vantage point, we take in over 9,000 high-rise buildings of every variety covering Hong Kong. The wind is brisk as are the photos taken, we scurry back inside the coach for the next destination.
Roads here are like driving along the back of a snake, curving with the landscape in every direction. I brace myself and keep my eyes on the horizon. When the coach finally spits us out at a local market, the only thing on my shopping list is ginger and fresh air.
One final destination.
I apprehensively board the coach after our guide convinces me the roads will smooth out. It’s not true, yet, I am glad to have continued as we board a sampan and are taken to a unique floating world. This is a realm unto its own where worn and deeply detailed boats wear their stories. Exaggerated features give these vessels a cartoonish look that brings an inner giddiness. Our sampan is expertly maneuvered by a wise woman with sharp eyes. The interior is dripping in delicate flowers and red lanterns, in contrast to the worn tires roped along the outside. We are taken past the Jumbo Kingdom where a floating restaurant, that capsized in 2022, sits like a ghost awaiting restoration.
Inspired and completely wiped, we nearly sprint back to Silver Dawn and embrace her luxurious sanctuary. A quiet lunch and lounge on our private veranda to reset before heading to the top deck for Hong Kong’s nightly light show.
We sail moments after this display and as we do, a full party erupts. The scene is mind-boggling! Picture if you will, an unending skyline of massive buildings lit in every color against the night sky. Onboard we sit at outdoor bistro tables overlooking a stunning pool. Flatbread fresh from a wood fire oven arrives as an aside to wine. A live band strikes up as we sail through the colorful port of Hong Kong, how can one resist the urge to dance? The ship pulls hard to starboard and water from the spa spills out across the deck. We all cheer!
This dance party under the stars continues until we can no longer see the harbor lights. I must add, Trevor surprises the heck out of me with his moves, this man can dance! Where was this hiding?
What an electric night, one forever etched into my memories.
Thank you, Hong Kong, you are full of life!
