a bit of subversive fun

It’s time to cause some good trouble in the name of, ‘being in the moment.’

To preface this small act of rebellion, allow me to share the story that kicked off a chain of events.

After losing the will to live in a waiting room, my husband lamented that everyone there, including himself, was a captive audience. For hours all were inundated by loud day-time TV spewing forth endless news and mindlessness.

As we continued this conversation, it meandered down a rabbit hole of how TV is everywhere. From gyms, waiting rooms, restaurants, and bars to hair salons, dentists, and even bathrooms. Moments to stare off into space and let one’s mind wander, or have a deeply connected conversation have disappeared.

Humans are overpowered by screens of every size, how does one win?

In that moment I had an epiphany. We’ve come so far technologically, there must be a small handheld device that turns off any TV in the vicinity. After some quick research, I found it. TV B Gone. Simply point the palm-sized device at any TV, push the button for a few seconds, and voila. I promptly ordered two.

Once they arrived we picked a favorite dining location, each of us armed with our ‘environmental management device’, and headed out. Two TVs replayed a game from earlier, there was not much interest from patrons, yet the animated screens and commercials kept stealing attention.

Looking around like two naughty school kids, we aimed our devices, and off went both TVs!

We looked wide-eyed and very guilty as we muffled a giggle, then noticed how people began facing each other and talking. Conversation increased and humans were more present.

We felt like heroes!

Almost 30 minutes passed and no one cared or noticed. Until management inquired to the barkeep, ‘Why are the TVs off?’ Back on they went and attentions were hijacked once again. Not giving up, we chose our moment and the screens went dark once more.

Success! The rest of our meal was screen-free.

Little did we know we were being watched by a diner behind us. She paid her bill and before leaving, approached us. ‘I saw what you did,’ she said, ‘and it was fantastic!’

It was.

We were the TV Bandits and positively giddy about it! If you wish to join us as a TV Bandit follow the link below and purchase a TV B Gone of your own. Then, go cause a bit of good trouble.
